Make a stand against Waka Kotahi's SH1 upgrade plan (Timaru-St Andrews)
This plan is not safe

Have you heard of Waka Kotahi's plans to "upgrade" SH1 between Timaru and St Andrews?
Probably not- and you're not alone!
We believe while safety improvements can be made on this stretch of road, the plan proposed significantly increases risk, confusion and frustration, and decreases safety in the area. Are you happy adding up to 7.2km to your daily trip home? No.
Are you happy with a central median barrier, preventing passing slow vehicles (e.g. tractors)? No.
Are you happy with emergency services response times being increased due to the inability to pass traffic or turn right on SH1? No.
Are you happy with cyclists being physically unable to maintain the road code standard 1.5m seperation? No.
Do you know how to safely use, and navigate a hook-turn? No.
All this and more is on the cards if Waka Kotahi proceed with the proposed "upgrade plan". Is this okay with you?
We need your help!

About & Concerns

Paul Fisher, leading the charge in getting Waka Kotahi to review the SH1 upgrade plan

Hi! I'm Paul Fisher, leading the charge in getting Waka Kotahi to review the SH1 upgrade plan.
As a Normanby resident, the changes proposed have a direct impact on not only myself, but our whole community; increasing risk, confusion and frustration for everyone.
We can all agree this stretch of road has caused accidents, and it's possible that some safety improvements could be made - however the proposal put forward is not the option.
Concerns
• Safety of residents with longer response times for emergency services if they are stuck behind slow traffic or road is blocked by an accident
• How are cyclists been catered for, how to keep 1.5 meters distance
• Slow traffic and wide loads will clog the highway up very quickly
• Extra distances agricultural vehicles need to travel to get between paddocks/farms
• School busses can't stop
• Rural delivery can't cross between houses
• The danger of hook turns on unlit roads
• What the heck is a hook turn?
• Extra traffic crossing the highway at Normanby intersection
• Some residents will have an extra 7.2 kms added to their journey just to get across side of the road.
